The Eden Model

A practical guide to care in a trauma-informed setting

At the entrance to the Eden Therapeutic Boarding School, a quotation by Simone de Beauvoir is displayed prominently on the wall:

“First, her wings are clipped—and then she is blamed for not knowing how to fly.”

Connecting the work carried out on a personal level with a deep understanding of the social environment and its impact on each girl ultimately enables a process through which she can move from being a victim of her circumstances and society to taking ownership of herself and her life.

What Is the Eden Model?

The Eden Model is a unique and innovative approach developed by Ronit Shoval through her work with girls experiencing complex post-traumatic stress in a residential care setting. The model combines evidence-based approaches to treating the effects of trauma – Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) – with an understanding of trauma as a social rather than personal issue, alongside a motivational therapeutic approach. Together, these three elements create trauma-informed environments in which patients can feel safe and move toward healing and change.

To date, the Eden Model has helped hundreds of girls who have experienced trauma and abuse move from being victims of trauma to becoming independent, confident young women capable of building full and meaningful lives.

The book presents practical methods for working in trauma-informed environments, making the model applicable to a wide range of therapeutic settings in Israel and around the world. Although the guide is intended primarily for care professionals, its underlying message is relevant and meaningful to educators and parents as well.
