October 7th HerPhoto
Artist and curator: Alicia Shahaf
We, the women, want to make our voices heard, to give words and form to our emotions.
We, the Israeli women, are expected to be strong, to silence our pain. The October 7th attack have a unique gender aspect: in theexperiences, thoughts, feelings, and coping mechanisms.
In the exhibition, thirteen women express in their own voices the events ofthe most difficult day of their lives.
The series of photographic testimonies of these women, initiated by the Eden association, is becoming a real-time historicaldocument.
The words are brought from the heart, almost without mediation.
I listened to the video testimonies, met the women, asked them to think about one sentence, a feeling that captures a moment andaccompanies them since during that ongoing event.
Together we translated the words into an image, planned an idea and met for a photo session.
The photograph adds further validation to personal trauma and serves as an additional layer in the coping process for each andevery woman.
My loved ones Eti, Daniel, Dorin, Eden, Einav, Jenny, Liem, Miri, Ravit, Reut, Shuli, Vivi and Meirav, thank you for opening your hearts and for the trust you gave in me.
Danielle Dahary, 33 years old, now divorced and a mother of two. We moved to Kerem Shalom in July 2022, and on October 7th, 2023, from 6:30 AM, I stayed in the safe room for 38 hours until we were rescued, along with my then-husband, our two children, andour dog. This was during terrorist infiltrations into the kibbutz, battles, mortar fire, and a constant existential fear for my life and thelives of my loved ones.
Dorin Cohen, mother of Adam and Yehonatan, wife of Itamar, a survivor of the massacre in Kibbutz Gaza. was injured and killed.
Einav Mor Maoz, married to a member of Kibbutz Nahal Oz. On October 7th, I stayed in the safe room for 18 and a half hours, during which there were attempts to break into the safe room, and a gunfight took place inside my house.
Eti Madar Itzhak, from Kibbutz Neot Mordechai on the northern border. On October 7th, I felt how all the cards were shuffled: mypartner was called up for reserve duty, the business I built was put on hold, and I evacuated from my home to Kibbutz Geva with my children, far from our home and community, where we remain to this day. From the pain, I found the strength to strengthen myself and act for the North until we can return.
Jenny Sividia, the sister of Shlomi Sividia who was murdered in Nova, and a survivor of Nova myself. I hid for nearly 5 hours under atree in a pomelo orchard together with my partner, while the terrorists were all around us. Ravit Bloy, a courageous mother to Idan, Ariel, and Yali, married to Alex. Idan R.I.P, a signals officer from the Golani Brigade’s 13thBattalion, ,fell after fierce fighting in the command center at Nahal Oz. A mother fleeing from terrible news.
Reut Roth-Ksantini from Kibbutz Magen, A mother of three, and partner of Nadav Rot, who on October 7th went to defend thekibbutz and was injured. I found myself alone in the shelter with my three children for 50 hours and had to be a hero against my will.
